The Financial Post reports in its Friday edition that there is a big reshaping going on of North America's energy infrastructure backbone. The Post's Claudia Cattaneo writes that Enbridge moved Thursday to position itself for the coming growth. It is moving some of its legacy assets into an affiliated income fund that enjoys a higher valuation. The move will allow it to increase its dividend by 33 per cent, starting on March 1 and grow it further by 14 per cent to 16 per cent through 2018, while reducing the cost of funding of its $44-billion growth program and at the same time financing new investment opportunities. Enbridge will continue to operate the assets and has no plans to change its business strategy and priorities. Enbridge also said it was considering a parallel restructuring of its operations in the United States. The move is happening despite weaker oil prices, underscoring that the infrastructure reshaping is a long-term game based on the need to transport to customers new North American oil and gas supplies from shale oil and gas deposits and from the oil sands, replacing imports. Enbridge boss Al Monaco says, "We are very encouraged with what we see in terms of organic opportunities."
