The National Post reports in its Tuesday edition that the Kinder Morgan protest camp on Burnaby Mountain is a weird and sometimes lawless place. The Post's Brian Hutchinson writes that a thinning number of protesters straggled from their shelters Monday to denounce Enbridge rival Kinder Morgan. Kinder wants to lay a new oil pipeline under Burnaby Mountain, just outside Vancouver. The pipeline would eventually join up with an existing Kinder Morgan pipeline that runs a different route through Burnaby, and would allow the company to move even more Alberta oil through British Columbia's lower mainland, down to Burrard Inlet and onto tankers, then out to sea and to distant ports. The proposed pipeline expansion needs National Energy Board approval. There is no guarantee of that. In the meantime, Kinder's local subsidiary, Trans Mountain Pipeline, is conducting field studies to determine if putting a pipeline under Burnaby Mountain is even viable. Protesters have been camped on the mountain for weeks. Last week, B.C. Supreme Court Justice Austin Cullen granted an injunction request from Trans Mountain and ordered demonstrators to stay outside of two designated work areas while borehole testing continued.
