FP says CP CFO doubts pipelines coming any time soon

The Financial Post reports in its Thursday, Nov. 13, edition that Canadian Pacific Railway chief financial officer Bart Demosky says key pipelines to the East and West Coast will not be completed any time soon, leaving railways to fill the gap for Canadian crude shippers. The Post's Kristine Owram writes that Mr. Demosky says TransCanada's Energy East pipeline or Enbridge proposed North Gateway pipeline out to the West Coast face "far too many roadblocks to be overcome any time soon for that to be an outlet for crude." Mr. Demosky was CFO at Suncor Energy before joining CP a year ago. He says rail will fill the pipeline space. Both pipeline companies face opposition from environmentalists and first nations groups. The lack of new pipeline infrastructure in Canada has been exacerbated by six years of U.S. government indecision on TransCanada's Keystone XL pipeline. Railways have been left to fill that gap, boosting profit but also raising concerns about safety. Mr. Demosky says CP's forecast that it will haul 200,000 carloads of crude in 2015 -- up from 120,000 this year -- is "conservative" despite falling oil prices. Mr. Demosky is not worried about what falling crude prices will mean for railways.
