The Financial Post reports in its Wednesday edition that Enbridge faces opposition to its Northern Gateway project, its Line 9 reversal and Alberta Clipper pipeline expansion project. The Post's Geoffrey Morgan writes that chief executive officer Al Monaco says he has considered the downside risk complicating major projects. "Well, I have to admit that's crossed my mind," Mr. Monaco responded when asked whether the returns to the company on major projects are worth the "agony" the company goes through over multiple years and the devaluation to the company's brand by opposition. Speaking at the company's annual investor conference, he added, however, that "how we add value is through the major projects capability." He said, "So no, we wouldn't look at it and say, 'Boy, it's tough out there.'" Mr. Monaco added that it was "generally true" that the expected returns for major projects, which face major opposition, should provide the company better returns as few other mid-stream players are willing to pursue their development. Enbridge will spend $44-billion through 2018 on new pipelines and power projects to keep pace with demand and boost earnings per share by between 10 per cent and 12 per cent.
