Van Sun says Canopy, others see U.S. hold onto old ways

The Vancouver Sun reports in its Saturday edition that Canadians may find themselves banned for life from entering the United States if they have had any involvement with cannabis. A Sun editorial says that even though many states -- including next-door Washington State -- have legalized or decriminalized the drug, the U.S. federal government still takes a hard line, particularly at its borders. It routinely bans foreigners for life from entering the U.S. if it is discovered that they have ever been involved with marijuana. That can include those connected to Canada's legal trade in the product, even simply as an investor in a marijuana company. There is genuine concern that even workers employed in government marijuana stores in British Columbia and other provinces could be banned from the U.S. if their employment is discovered. One can imagine a Canadian government employee showing up at the U.S. border with their spouse and young children, excited, say, for their first trip to Disneyland, only to be turned away. How the Americans could view someone like that as a risk to their "homeland security" is anyone's guess. The Sun wants Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland to press the matter with the Americans.
