Globe applauds Scotiabank's Tangerine index funds

2016-10-18 07:47 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday edition that the Wall Street Journal recently looked which investors behaved more rationally. The Globe's Andrew Hallam writes that it turns out index fund investors captured a higher percentage of their funds' returns, compared with investors in actively managed funds. That might be because index fund investors do not have to think about fund selection. They just accept the market's return. That just leaves decisions (or worrying) about asset allocation. Removing those decisions might juice returns. Such funds might offer investors a behavioural panacea -- but they are not available in Canada. Fortunately, Bank of Nova Scotia's Tangerine unit provides the next best thing. It offers four index funds. Each represents a diversified portfolio based on different risk tolerances. Their MER costs are 1.07 per cent a year. That is a lot higher than the 0.14 per cent that Vanguard's Target Retirement fund investors pay, but it is significantly cheaper than the global balanced funds sold by Canada's banks. Between January, 2008, and Sept. 31, 2016, Tangerine's Balanced Portfolio beat the banks' actively managed global funds by an average total of 14.82 per cent.
