The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday edition that Macquarie Capital Markets has hired former Scotia Capital liability trader Michael O'Rourke. The Globe's Niall McGee writes that Mr. O'Rourke, who parted ways with Scotia Capital in April, starts with Macquarie later this month as co-head of trading in Toronto. Macquarie is staffing up, particularly in research, as the dealer increases its focus on a few select sectors, including technology and industrials. Mr. O'Rourke is the second high-profile hire in recent months on the sales and trading desk at Macquarie. In May, David Ricciardelli, previously with Merrill Lynch, joined the firm as head of equity sales. In line with the dealer's strategy globally, Macquarie has been increasing its footprint in technology and industrials. Gus Papageorgiou, a tech analyst with Scotia Capital for many years, joined in March. He was enticed back to the sell side after taking a detour of roughly 18 months into the private sector. In April, Michael Glen, an analyst in industrials previously with Laurentian Bank, joined the dealer. In the spring, Macquarie got a small piece of the record-breaking $4.4-billion TransCanada bought deal.
