His was a public voice of calm and reason on a wild day in world financial markets following the shocking referendum result that few bankers or investors were expecting. The Globe says Mr. Carney's credibility is on the line. Dartmouth College economics professor David Banchflower says: "The markets take no account whatsoever of anything he says, so his reputation is not very strong. ... Every time he says anything, the opposite happens." Other economists say Mr. Carney's comments did help calm markets.
