The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday, June 25, edition that Bank of England Governor Mark Carney is facing the toughest test of his career after Britain voted to leave the European Union. The Globe's Paul Waldie, Brian Milner and Rachelle Younglai write that the former Bank of Canada governor had been outspoken in his belief that Brexit would be harmful to the British economy, angering many on the Leave side who saw it as blatant political interference. He must stabilize the battered British pound and safeguard a financial system without full political support. Mr. Carney was quick to assure Britons that the central bank has a strategy in place to cope with whatever volatile markets dish up. His was a public voice of calm and reason on a wild day in world financial markets following the shocking referendum result that few bankers or investors were expecting. The Globe says Mr. Carney's credibility is on the line. Dartmouth College economics professor David Banchflower says: "The markets take no account whatsoever of anything he says, so his reputation is not very strong. ... Every time he says anything, the opposite happens." Other economists say Mr. Carney's comments did help calm markets.
