The Financial Post reports in its Thursday edition that federal Heritage Minister Melanie Joly has filled the long-vacant role of Ontario commissioner at the CRTC.
The Post's Emily Jackson writes that the government has appointed Toronto lawyer Monique Lafontaine to the commission for a five-year term.
Ms. Lafontaine comes from the broadcast sector. She joins the CRTC as it delves into controversial files on Canadian content requirements and the future of content consumption.
Media producers commended Ms. Joly for the appointment. Canadian Media Producers Association president Reynolds Mastin said that Ms. Lafontaine is the first commissioner in the CRTC's nearly 50-year history with experience on the production side of broadcasting.
The CRTC struggled with vacancies surrounding its leadership transition over the past year, with critics questioning why the government was so slow to fill roles at the busy regulator.
Ms. Lafontaine replaces Raj Shoan, who was the first commissioner to be fired from the CRTC after a protracted conflict with former chair Jean-Pierre Blais.
Mr. Shoan is fighting a legal battle to get his job back. He was investigated for workplace harassment and subsequently fired.
