The Financial Post reports in its Thursday edition that the wireless industry has enjoyed an extended period of growth, but one analyst is questioning whether results can get any better after a "blowout" second quarter.
The Post's Emily Jackson writes that RBC's Drew McReynolds noted that carriers beat Bay Street's expectations and he expects this healthy operating environment to continue in the second half of the year. "However, we believe the [second quarter] may be as good as wireless gets," Mr. McReynolds wrote in a research note Wednesday. In the quarter, Telus, Rogers and BCE added a collective 281,000 subscribers, handily beating RBC's estimate of 223,000 and last year's additions of 196,000 new users. He noted a number of obstacles carriers may face in the second half of the year.
Upcoming challenges include annual promotions during the back-to-school and holiday seasons, which could cut into margins if pricing gets aggressive. The expected launch of the iPhone 8 could "add an extra kick" to the volume of upgrades, which cost providers money to subsidize new, more expensive devices.
Mr. McReynolds also pointed to an expanding and increasingly competitive Shaw Communications, owner of Freedom Mobile.
