Post says NFL lobbies feds on behalf of BCE over ads

2017-01-05 09:42 ET - In the News

The Financial Post reports in its Thursday edition that the NFL has taken its fight to overturn Canada's new Super Bowl ad policy to the Prime Minister's Office. The Post's Emily Jackson writes that the NFL lobbied the PMO, the International Trade Minister's office and three MPs in November and December in an attempt to pressure the Trudeau government to reverse the broadcast policy which enables Canadians to watch big-budget American ads during the Super Bowl. For decades, broadcasters have substituted U.S. ads with Canadians ads, selling local ad space to recoup the cost of the rights to broadcast the programming. Last summer, however, the CRTC banned the practice of simultaneous substitution solely for the Super Bowl after deeming U.S. ads an "integral element" of the event. Both Bell Media and the NFL filed legal challenges in late December asking the Federal Court to overturn the decision. "When you want to get something done -- and we do -- we are using all the tools in our tool box, that is up to and including reaching out to the Prime Minister's Office," said Jocelyn Moore, the NFL's top lobbyist. Ms. Moore remains optimistic, noting that the government has changed since the policy was introduced.
