Van Sun says Shaw, others see antenna player make pitch

The Vancouver Sun reports in its Thursday edition that Ottawa-based tech outfit Nuvyyo is pitching its device called Tablo, which allows users to access digital over-the-air television signals. Postmedia's Emily Jackson writes that Tablo also allows users to pause live broadcasts, record shows or skip commercials. Over-the-air TV does not require monthly payments, and it is legal thanks in part to the Betamax's court ruling that went against Hollywood in 1984. Nuvyyo chief executive officer Grant Hall said many Canadians do not realize they can access free broadcasts by using an antenna to pick up over-the-air signals, which broadcasters must transmit if they want their content included in basic service packages. Less than 10 per cent of Canadian households watch TV via over-the-air transmissions. Set-up costs include $275 for the box, plus at least another $100 for an antenna and a decent-sized USB hard drive. The system has not gained much popularity in Canada since it launched two years ago. The push comes as TV providers Bell, Shaw and Rogers reported a combined net loss of more than 70,000 subscribers in the most recent quarter (however, gains in Internet protocol TV made up for satellite losses at Bell).
