The Financial Post reports in its Saturday edition that BCE has sweetened the deal to buy Manitoba Telecom Services by promising to fix patchy service along the highway between Winnipeg and the U.S. border. The Post's Emily Jackson writes that Bell and MTS announced at a joint news conference Friday plans to blanket Highway 75, a 100-kilometre route to one of Western Canada's busiest border crossings, with continuous high-speed wireless service. The spending depends on regulatory approval of the $3.9-billion friendly deal announced in early May. Critics argue the purchase will hurt competition in the province's wireless market, while proponents say the consolidation will lead to better infrastructure and service. It is unclear where the federal Liberals stand on the deal. Manitoba Premier Brian Pallister threw his support behind the acquisition on Friday as drivers prepared to hit the roads for the long weekend. If approved, Bell promised to invest $1-billion in infrastructure in the province over the next five years starting with the highway. Regulators are not expected to make a decision on the acquisition until late 2016 or early 2017. Meantime, MTS will look for tower sites and permits along the highway.
