The Financial Post reports in its Saturday edition that television providers have handed over data on their new basic TV packages to the CRTC. The Post's Emily Jackson writes the broadcast regulator tacked the requirement to reveal details on so-called "skinny" TV packages to its annual licence renewals. Companies were mandated to offer $25 or less deals as of March 1 as part of an overhaul meant to give consumers more choice about how they pay for TV channels in an era of cord-cutting. Consumer groups have accused broadcasters of deliberately offering lacklustre basic packages, then piling on extra costs for necessary equipment to discourage people from buying the cheaper service. Big players with licences slated to expire at the end of August, including Telus and Rogers, confirmed they complied with the request as a standard part of meeting the CRTC's requirements. The CRTC wants to know how many new subscribers chose basic versus premium packages, how many switched and how many complained about the new offerings. "A lot of people complained they're not getting what we promised," CRTC spokesman Patricia Valladao told the Post, cautioning that the CRTC would need a high volume of complaints for any big change.
