Post says BCE's loss is the small ISP's victory

The Financial Post reports in its Thursday edition that indie Internet providers are celebrating Ottawa's decision to uphold a ruling by the CRTC which forces the telcos to sell smaller competitors wholesale access to the telcos' fibre networks. The Post's Emily Jackson writes that cabinet announced Wednesday it has rejected Bell Canada's plea to quash the CRTC ruling that aimed to provide consumers more choice in high-speed Internet providers, citing the need to support competition and increase high-speed broadband coverage. Bell wants to keep its ultrafast network for its own commercial purposes, after spending $2.5-billion on upgrades. "It's a big win for everybody," VMedia's George Burger told the Post. "The gravitation toward the higher speeds ultimately meant with no access, there was no opportunity for competitive prices." Bell, which has filed five such petitions in two decades, argued the CRTC decision would most hurt rural communities without sufficient returns to justify building fibre infrastructure. Nearly 80,000 people signed OpenMedia's on-line petition asking the feds to "reject Bell's price-gouging scheme." Bell's fibre cables allow top download speeds of up to 940 megabits per second.
