Globe says programming head to depart BCE's Bell Media

2015-08-25 07:37 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday edition Phil King, the head of programming for the CTV network and a long-time TSN executive, is departing Bell Media. The Globe's James Bradshaw writes since 2010, Mr. King has been president of CTV and sports programming for Bell. He later added entertainment to his portfolio, and is in charge of shopping for shows to fill CTV's prime-time lineups, with oversight of TSN as well. He was largely responsible for the heavy dose of superhero shows in CTV's recent lineups, landing the likes of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Mr. King's departure continues a shakeup in the senior ranks at Bell Media. In April, the company dismissed its president, Kevin Crull, three weeks after an ill-fated attempt to intervene in news coverage of a regulatory decision for the television industry. Before taking the reins at CTV, Mr. King was president of TSN from 2004 to 2010, when the network was dominating the sports ratings in Canada, and advised on coverage of the 2010 and 2012 Olympic Games. Mr. King was also involved in Bell's failed bid for national NHL broadcast rights. The person believed to be the front-runner to succeed Mr. King is Randy Lennox, who runs Universal Music Canada.
