The Financial Post reports in its Saturday edition Federal Court has ordered eight Canadian wireless carriers that sell the iPhone to produce quantitative information about their commercial relations with Apple. The Post's Christina Pellegrini writes these rulings arrived three days after motions were brought to an Ottawa court Monday to advance the Competition Bureau's probe into whether Apple has had an influence on wholesale and consumer pricing of the iPhone in violation of Canadian law. The carriers, which include the three incumbents and five regional operators, have 90 calendar days to respond. "iPhone sales account for close to 40% of smartphone sales in Canada and have historically been less lucrative for incumbents to sell compared with Android or Blackberry devices," Desjardins analyst Maher Yaghi said in a note Friday. "If the review pushes Apple to become less aggressive in the prices it seeks in the marketplace, this could in part reduce the up-front subsidy that incumbents pay to put an iPhone in the hands of a customer." The bureau began its investigation last year after becoming aware of Apple's potentially anti-competitive clauses with Canadian mobile service providers.
