The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday edition the telcos want to sell Internet, phone and television services in one tidy package, and now independent players are trying to gain that same advantage. The Globe's Christine Dobby writes small Internet service providers are beginning to offer conventional television service using Internet protocol television (IPTV) technology. "It's very critical," said Matt Stein at Distributel Communications. The idea is to use the Internet to deliver traditional broadcast channels in real time. "Our customers are asking for bundles. Television has been one of the primary things customers were asking for and we're benefiting greatly by having it in our bundle." Distributel, which sells Internet and long-distance services to about 200,000 customers, started offering IPTV in parts of Ontario and Quebec in October through a partnership with Zazeen Inc., which launched its own IPTV service last year. VMedia Inc. also launched an Internet and IPTV business in 2013 and by January expects to have about 15,000 customers, 6,000 of whom subscribe to its television service. Once they win licences to distribute TV, they must also buy the broadcast rights from BCE, Rogers or Shaw.
