The Financial Post reports in its Tuesday edition Disney says it will re-evaluate the business case for staying in Canada if regulations become too burdensome, vice-president Susan Fox warned on Monday. The Post's Claire Brownell writes Ms. Fox appeared before the CRTC's hearing into the future of television amid increased competition from on-line video providers like Netflix. Disney owns the ABC network. CRTC chairman Jean-Pierre Blais asked Ms. Fox if the regulator's proposals, such as ending the practice of running Canadian commercials over American programming and requiring cable companies to let customers choose and pay for only the channels they want, would lead Disney to pull out of the Canadian television market. "I don't think it's appropriate to say we would exit a market, particularly one as valuable as Canada," Ms. Fox said. "But ... the regulatory environment is a component there." Disney joins the major Canadian cableco in its opposition to ending simultaneous substitution of Canadian advertisements during American programs, a practice most noticed and loathed during the Super Bowl. Disney is also opposed to mandating a pure "a la carte" channel selection model with no preset bundles.
