Van Sun says Rogers, others face same woes as CBC

The Vancouver Sun reports in its Tuesday edition the loss of hockey rights to Rogers may have brought things to a head, but the CBC's dilemma is not about money: It is existential. Postmedia's Andrew Coyne writes it is not just a public broadcaster that is under threat. It is unclear what role remains for broadcasters, period. Early television suffered from a number of technological limitations. The result: a handful of networks all crowded around the middle of the road, offering the same, predictable fare. If the CBC's woes have excited less than the usual sympathies from other media, it is perhaps because there is enough media woes to go around, with declining revenues and job cuts. Increasingly, the CBC's dilemma is indistinguishable from that facing the private networks, themselves suffering from a fragmented audience and a decline in TV viewing. Indeed, as on-line video proliferates, whether in the comparatively traditional form of Netflix and Hulu, or aggregators like YouTube or Vimeo, it is not just the networks that are in trouble: so are cable and satellite operators. Like Canada Post or Via Rail, Mr. Coyne expects the CBC will limp on, purposelessly, with more "action plans" and "reinventions."
