The Vancouver Sun reports in its Thursday edition that health officials should expect an increase in the number of seniors using cannabis, which poses unique challenges for the care system. The Sun's Derrick Penner quotes Isobel Mackenzie, British Columbia's Seniors Advocate, saying: "Seniors, as with everybody, will be able to go and buy it and use it. I think their issues, to a large extent, are the same as everybody else. There might be a little bit of caution around more frail, elderly seniors." Ms. Mackenzie said that she doubts whether care homes will refuse the right to access a legally available substance. Residents will have to abide by existing smoking restrictions, Ms. Mackenzie said, but seniors would likely be using other methods of using cannabis anyway. The prospect of legalization has prompted a "huge discussion," among care facilities, said Al Jina, chief executive officer of Park Place Seniors Living and former director on the board of the B.C. Care Providers Association. "Our biggest concerns for seniors (are around) how are they going to use it?" Mr. Jina said. "How is it going to be dispensed? How is it going to be stored and how are we going to train our nurses to administer it medically?"
