Globe says Hexo, rivals see pot shop stoke fear

The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday, Aug. 28, edition that the Beaches Toronto Montessori school (located at 964 Kingston Rd.), which cares for 64 children, is close to one of 13 Toronto locations that won an Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario lottery last week to open a pot shop. The Globe's Mark Rendell and Caroline Alphonso write that the Progressive Conservative government's pot shop rules say they needed to be located at least 150 metres away from schools. The government rules, however, were silent on how far stores needed to be from childcare centres. Lottery winners gained the right to apply for licences, but their applications still need to be approved by the provincial government. Beaches childcare centre co-owner Anne Jacques on Tuesday said that the reason the 150-metre buffer was put in place was to protect children, and yet it excludes a large group of them. The centre serves children as young as 18 months old, but also includes a number of kindergarteners. Attorney-General spokesman Jenessa Crognali says the 150-metre buffer applies to schools, including private schools, as defined by the Education Act. She says the Montessori childcare centre is not considered a school.
