The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday, March 3, edition that Barrick Gold ($14.88) is down about 33 per cent over the past six months, and it was setting new 52-week lows during the past week (all figures Canadian unless otherwise stated). The Globe's Ted Dixon writes in the Who's Buying and Selling column that in typical contrarian fashion, a director was buying. From Feb. 23 and Feb. 27, director Pablo Marcet acquired a total of 5,000 common shares at an average price of $15.54 . The purchases took place following the release of fourth quarter results on Feb. 14. Quarterly adjusted net earnings came in at 22 U.S. cents a share, which was flat year over year. Canaccord analyst Tony Lesiak continued to rate Barrick "buy" in the Eye column on Oct. 23, 2017. The shares were then worth $20.22. Credit Suisse analyst Anita Soni said in The Globe on Oct. 27, 2017, that it was "time to take a pause" on Barrick. Its shares were then worth $18.64. On Dec. 12, 2017, The Globe reported that Desjardins Securities analyst Josh Wolfson rated Barrick "hold." The shares were then worth $17.54. The Globe reported on Feb. 21, 2018, that Mr. Wolfson reiterated his "hold" call. The shares were then worth $16.22.
