Globe says Soni hikes Barrick Gold to "outperform"

2016-04-11 07:51 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that Credit Suisse raised its gold price forecast by 10 per cent for 2016 and 12 per cent for 2017, citing continued investment demand and declining mine supply. The Globe's David Leeder writes that with the changes, analyst Anita Soni raised her rating for Barrick Gold ($19.75 (Canadian)) to "outperform" from "neutral." She says Barrick's capital allocation strategy "ideally" positions it to capture gold leverage. Ms. Soni says: "The company's commitment to a 15-per-cent ROIC (return on invested capital) is differentiated in the gold sector. This strategy positions ABX to effectively capture the leverage through prudent deployment of cash flow that would accrue during a period of higher gold prices. ABX is on track to reduce its debt to a more manageable level ($8-billion (U.S.) target by 2016 from $10-billion (U.S.) at 2015 and $13-billion (U.S.) at 2014) and a higher gold price could accelerate the process." She raised her target price to $17 (U.S.) from $11 (U.S.). Analysts on average target the shares at $14.20 (U.S.). CIBC analyst David Haughton kept Barrick at "sector performer" in the Eye column on March 30. The shares were then worth $18.36 (Canadian).
