The Financial Post reports in its Friday edition that Kinross Gold and private equity player Waterton Global Resource Management are buying assets from Barrick Gold. The Post's Peter Koven writes that Kinross and Waterton have agreed to pay Barrick a combined $710-million for assets across Nevada (all figures U.S.). Kinross will buy the Bald Mountain mine and a 50-per-cent interest in the Round Mountain mine for $610-million, while Waterton is paying $110-million for the Ruby Hill mine and the Spring Valley project. Mr. Koven says these are landmark acquisitions for both companies. Kinross gets 100 per cent of Round Mountain -- something it has craved for years -- and a separate mine that it believes has plenty of upside. For deal-hungry Waterton, this is its biggest acquisition to date. The Post says Kinross and Waterton have been two of the most closely watched companies in the gold space, because they are among the very few with cash to burn on acquisitions. Kinross has $1-billion on its balance sheet, while Waterton raised more than $1-billion for its second precious metals fund last year. This is the first big deal for Kinross since its disastrous $7.1-billion takeover of Red Back Mining in 2010.
