The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition miners are getting into bed with each other to help run mines and develop projects that might otherwise face cancellation or long delays. A Bloomberg dispatch to The Globe says this runs against a company's natural inclination to do its own thing. "You always want to have 100 per cent of a project, but you weigh that against the risk that you may not be able to bring it into production alone," said Raymond James analyst Phil Russo, shortly after Teck Resources and Goldcorp announced a joint venture involving projects in Chile. "Right now investors have an aversion to risk that makes these types of joint arrangements a lot more appealing." Greater co-operation "is something you'll see a lot more of," said Ken Hoffman at Bloomberg Intelligence. "You'll see more tie-ups, mine mergers, a lot more co-ordination in the industry, just because if they don't, their other option is to shut the mines down." In July, Barrick agreed to sell a 50-per-cent stake in Zaldivar to Antofagasta for $1-billion (U.S.). In May, Barrick signed a "long-term strategic co-operation agreement" with China's Zijin Mining and agreed to sell it a 50-per-cent stake in its Porgera mine.
