The Financial Post reports in its Friday edition Barrick Gold has added a heavy hitter in the Chilean mining scene to its executive slate, but that doesn't mean Pascua Lama will get going any time soon. The Post's Jonathan Ratner, writing in Trading Desk, says Sergio Fuentes, who was previously vice-president of projects for Chilean state-owned copper miner Codelco, will oversee the potential development of Barrick's massive gold and silver project. With the half-built Pascua Lama project halted for more than a year now, Mr. Fuentes's immediate task will be to complete the final engineering of a permanent water management system on the Chilean side of the project. Citi Research analyst Brian Yu noted this is one of several roadblocks that need to be addressed before a decision on Pascua Lama can be made. "The project remains on care and maintenance, likely requires additional engineering optimization to make sure they can get it right on the second go-around, and economics remain questionable in the current gold and silver price environment," he told clients. Barrick shares closed Thursday at $13.11, down 14 cents on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
