The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday edition Barrick's former chief executive officer, Jamie Sokalsky, will take the reins of junior explorer Probe Mines in late October. The Globe's Rachelle Younglai writes the announcement comes one day after Mr. Sokalsky stepped down as CEO of Barrick. Mr. Sokalsky's departure came after Barrick eliminated the CEO position. He will become non-executive chair of Probe Mines at the end of October. In the interim, Mr. Sokalsky has been appointed director of Probe, which boasts two gold properties in Northern Ontario -- the Borden gold project and the Black Creek chromite deposit. The departure of Mr. Sokalsky comes the same week Barrick appointed lawyer Kevin Thomson to join Barrick as an executive. Meanwhile, Canadian Press reports Mr. Sokalsky is expected to replace Patrick Reid as chairman after the company's annual meeting Oct. 29. Mr. Reid is not standing for re-election as a director. Mr. Sokalsky was chief financial officer at Barrick from 1999 to 2012 before he became CEO. Probe said Tuesday that Mr. Sokalsky has been granted five-year options to acquire 500,000 shares at $2.41. Probe closed Tuesday at $2.42, up a cent on the TSX Venture Exchange.
