The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has filed civil fraud charges against Kelowna's Shane Whittle and a group of promoters for the pump-and-dump of Jammin' Java Corp., a purported coffee producer that included one of the sons of Bob Marley. The SEC claims that the group boosted the stock with misleading news and fraudulent on-line reports. Offshore entities then sold $78-million worth of shares, according to the SEC. (All figures are in U.S. dollars.)
The allegations are contained in a civil complaint the SEC filed on Tuesday, Nov. 17, in the Central District of California. The action targets a group of promoters, with Mr. Whittle featuring prominently among them. The SEC identifies him as a 39-year-old who has previously lived in Vancouver and Los Angeles, Calif. He is currently residing in Kelowna or the West Indies.
