Controversial Vancouver lawyer John Briner is the subject of yet another regulatory case, this one filed by the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission. The CFTC claims that he participated in 1,248 matched trades designed to illegally pass at least $390,000 from one party to another. (All figures are in U.S. dollars.) The trades occurred on OneChicago, a single stock futures exchange.

The allegations are contained in a civil complaint the CFTC filed on April 14, 2015, in the Northern District of Illinois. In addition to Mr. Briner, the complaint names as a defendant MetroWest Law Corp., his former law practice. (The firm has been in the custody of the Law Society of British Columbia since June, 2013.) The complaint also names as a defendant Matthew Marcus of California, who the CFTC identifies as one of Mr. Briner's former clients.
