West Texas Intermediate crude for July delivery lost $1.15 to $66.73 on the New York Merc, while Brent for July lost $1.05 to $75.39 (all figures in this para U.S.). Western Canadian Select traded at a discount of $18.10 to WTI ($48.63), widening from a discount of $17.15. Natural gas for June lost six cents to $2.88. The TSX energy index gained 1.47 points to 198.30.
Saskatchewan- and Utah-focused Crescent Point Energy Corp. (CPG) gained 29 cents to $10.27 on 9.6 million shares after the immediate resignation of its president and chief executive officer, Scott Saxberg. In the company's news release this morning, Crescent Point gave Mr. Saxberg the credit for increasing its production to 180,000 barrels of oil equivalent a day now from about 275 barrels a day in 2001, when the company was formed. At the time, Mr. Saxberg was the vice-president of production. He became the president and CEO in 2003. This morning, he said it was "time for me to move on."
