West Texas Intermediate crude for February delivery gained 29 cents to $61.73 on the New York Merc, while Brent for March gained 16 cents to $67.78 (all figures in this para U.S.). Western Canadian Select traded at a discount of $25.05 to WTI ($36.68), unchanged. Natural gas for February gained four cents to $2.84. The TSX energy index closed down a fraction to 194.86.
Today's busiest Canadian oil and gas stocks included producers that continue to reel from substantial falls in 2017. Saskatchewan- and Utah-focused Crescent Point Energy Corp. (CPG), which today lost seven cents to $10.06 on 6.57 million shares, is down from $17.53 in the past year. Alberta Montney producer Birchcliff Energy Ltd. (BIR), which today lost nine cents to $3.91 on 4.54 million shares, is down from about $8.50 in the past year. Meanwhile, B.C. Montney producer Painted Pony Energy Ltd. (PONY), which today lost seven cents to $2.12 on 3.31 million shares, is down from $8.90 in the past year.
