West Texas Intermediate crude for August delivery added 86 cents to $44.24 on the New York Merc, while Brent for August added 82 cents to $46.65 (all figures in this para U.S.). Western Canadian Select traded at a discount of $10.20 to WTI ($34.04), unchanged. Natural gas for July added one cent to $3.04. The TSX energy index added 1.21 points to close at 172.49.
Baytex Energy Corp. (BTE) added 15 cents to $3.18 on 7.25 million shares, after patting itself on the back for the "excellent" production results it achieved during the first half of the year. The company pegged its production for the second quarter at 72,500 barrels of oil equivalent a day. Combined with first quarter production of 69,300 barrels a day, this puts the average output for the first half of the year at 70,900 barrels a day, already above Baytex's full-year guidance of 68,000 to 70,000 barrels a day. The quarter-over-quarter gain was largely thanks to the company's assets in the Texas Eagle Ford, where it gets just over half of its production. The rest comes from Western Canada.
