West Texas Intermediate crude for July delivery added 94 cents to $49.56 on the New York Merc, while Brent for July added $1.13 to $49.74 (all figures in this para U.S.). Western Canadian Select traded at a discount of $12.00 to WTI ($37.56), up from a discount of $12.05. Natural gas for June added 1.2 cents to $1.992. The TSX energy index added 3.94 points to close at 188.69.
Li Ka-Shing's Husky Energy Inc. (HSE) added 38 cents to $15.03 on 1.91 million shares. It has closed its $165-million sale of Western Canadian royalty assets to Freehold Royalties, according to an announcement from Freehold this morning. Husky had arranged this sale last month, after its agreement to sell a partial interest in its Lloydminster mid-stream assets for $1.7-billion to Cheung Kong Infrastructure and Power Assets Holdings, but before its agreement to sell producing assets in Saskatchewan for $595-million to Whitecap Resources Inc. (WCP: $10.22). These are just three in a string of asset sales that Husky wants to close this year. It continues to market other Western Canadian assets producing about 48,000 barrels of oil equivalent a day.
