West Texas Intermediate crude for July delivery lost $1.79 to $58.03 on the New York Merc, while Brent for July lost $1.79 to $63.72 (all figures in this para U.S.). Western Canadian Select traded at a discount of $9.75 to WTI ($48.28), unchanged. Natural gas for June lost two cents to $2.82. The TSX energy index lost 3.35 points to close at 220.54.

MEG Energy Corp. (MEG: $19.50) has added itself to the list of oil sands producers affected by the Lac La Biche forest fire. It has suspended operations at its 80,000-barrel-a-day Christina Lake operations as a precautionary measure and sent all non-essential staff and contractors off site. Yesterday, after Cenovus Energy Inc. (CVE: $20.69) shut down its Foster Creek site and Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. (CNQ: $37.95) shut in production at two of its sites, others in the area, including MEG, told news outlets that they were not affected yet but were watching the fire closely. Now MEG is down. Its Christina Lake project is about six miles northeast of a Cenovus project that is also called Christina Lake, and 11 miles northeast of Devon's Jackfish operations. Spokesmen for those companies told Stockwatch that both of those operations continue to operate normally.
