West Texas Intermediate crude for November delivery, the benchmark in North America, added 60 cents to $90.34 on the New York Merc, while Brent for November, the benchmark in Europe, added 48 cents to $92.79 (all figures in this para U.S.). Western Canadian Select, Canada's heavy oil benchmark, traded at a discount of $12.95 to WTI ($77.39), up from a discount of $13.15. Natural gas for November, the international benchmark, lost 14.1 cents to $3.89. The TSX energy index lost 2.03 points to close at 280.59.

Today is opening day for the B.C. Legislature, and Malaysia's Petronas, the company behind the $11-billion Pacific Northwest LNG (liquefied natural gas) proposal, marked the occasion with a statement criticizing the "proposed fiscal package and regulatory pace." If British Columbia does not hammer out all the details by the end of the month, said Petronas, the company will defer its investments for at least a decade. The statement comes less than two weeks after Petronas threatened to pull out of the project altogether. Then as now, the government is shrugging it off as mere posturing.
