New York spot gold regained $4.90 to $1,327.90 on Friday. The TSX Venture Exchange added 1.66 points to 623.27 while the TSX Gold Index fell 0.61 points to 196.64.

Eldorado Gold Corp. (ELD) jumped 18 cents to $5.79 on 4.94 million shares. The company said late Thursday that it had lost nearly $380-million (U.S.) last year. The company corrected "certain typographical errors" early today; unfortunately, the loss was not one of the 29 changes that it made. Nevertheless, the market appears content. Goldcorp Inc. (G) went the other way, falling 61 cents to $14.60 on 21 million shares. The company is merging with Newmont Mining Corp. through a $10-billion (U.S.) stock deal, while Barrick Gold Corp. (ABX: $17.13) contemplates a possible takeover of Newmont.

Ron Netolitzky's MAS Gold Corp. (MAS), down 1.5 cents to 10 cents on 45,000 shares, has received assays of up to 14.38 grams of gold per tonne over seven metres from the Point gold prospect on its Preview Lake property, northeast of La Ronge in north-central Saskatchewan. The assays, from the first two holes drilled this winter, returned 9.27 grams per tonne over three metres in the other hole, with subsequent, slightly deeper hits of 4.66 grams per tonne over two metres and 5.09 grams per tonne over three metres. Assays are pending from another 11 holes, including nine tests designed to test the downdip and northward extensions of the mineralization.
