New York spot gold rose $18.30 to $1,232.40 on Thursday. The TSX Venture Exchange rose 3.59 points to 644.95 while the TSX Gold Index added 6.08 points to 166.30. Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd. (AEM) led Canadian gold miners higher today. It added $2.06 to $48.56 on 1.49 million shares. Goldcorp Inc. (G) was also strong. It rose 70 cents to $12.59 on 6.3 million shares.
Grenville Thomas's Westhaven Ventures Inc. (WHN) dropped two cents to $1.05 on 2.12 million shares. The move follows Wednesday's 19-cent gain to $1.07 on 5.95 million shares. New assays from the South zone of the Shovelnose gold project in south-central British Columbia sparked the rally. The latest hole included a 46.2-metre zone that averaged 8.95 grams of gold and 65.47 grams of silver per tonne. There were several high-grade subintervals within that zone, including a 1.5-metre hit that averaged 48.04 grams of gold and 55.02 grams of silver per tonne and a five-metre interval that assayed 14.7 grams of gold and 215 grams of silver per tonne.
