New York spot gold rose $4.20 to $1,256.50 on Wednesday. The TSX Venture Exchange lost 1.82 points to 738.75 while the TSX Gold Index added 0.78 point to 195.42.Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd. (AEM) helped Canadian gold miners move higher today, adding 64 cents to $61.58 on 309,000 shares. Goldcorp Inc. (G) led a modest retreat, dropping five cents to $18.45 on 817,000 shares.

Dustin Angelo's Anaconda Mining Inc. (ANX), down 1.5 cents to 35 cents on 196,000 shares said today that it will increase its hostile bid for the shares of Allan Williams and Douglas Fulcher's Maritime Resources Corp. (MAE: $0.125) to 0.5 Anaconda share for each Maritime share. That is up from its previous offer of 0.39 share per Maritime share and its initial offer, a ratio of 0.364:1. The improved offer would give Maritime's shareholders a 27-per-cent interest in Anaconda. The initial offer, proposed in mid-April, would have given the company's shareholders 24 per cent of Anaconda's stock.
