New York spot gold jumped $8.90 to $1,289.40 on Thursday. The TSX Venture Exchange lost 2.62 points to 782.07 while the TSX Gold Index added 0.76 point to 198.05. Gainers were in the majority today among Canadian gold miners, but the gains were mostly modest. McEwen Mining Inc. (MUX) led the way, rising five cents to $2.57 on 292,000 shares. Torex Gold Resources Inc. (TXG) led the retreat. It fell 75 cents to $18.04 on 442,000 shares.

Wolf Wiese's Golden Dawn Minerals Inc. (GOM), up 1.5 cents to 27.5 cents on 614,000 shares, has received assays of up to 1,700 grams of silver and 2.68 grams of gold per tonne over one metre from rock-chip sampling at the Minnie Moore prospect on its Greenwood precious metals prospect in British Columbia. A second sample returned 85.9 grams of gold and 29.8 grams of silver per tonne across 0.4 metre from the Summit prospect. These are not grab samples, Mr. Wiese is quick to point out, they are "representative samples across their reported widths" that had been collected across mineralized zones. (True, but the crews still got to see what they were chipping.)
