New York spot gold gained $4.70 to $1,268.70 on Wednesday. The TSX Venture Exchange gained 2.28 points to 806.67 while the TSX Gold Index rose 1.22 points to 205.26. Most gold miners moved higher today, led by Premier Gold Mines Ltd. (PG), which added eight cents to $2.81 on 2.73 million shares. Kinross Gold Corp. (K) lost one cent to $4.76 on 9.48 million shares.

Glen Parsons and John Horsburgh's Mariana Resources Ltd. (MARL) jumped 68 cents to $1.71 on 13.44 million shares on word that it has agreed to a friendly acquisition by Nolan Watson's Sandstorm Gold Ltd. (SSL). Sandstorm,, down 50 cents to $4.94 on 4.38 million shares, has agreed to pay 28.75 pence in cash and issue 0.2573 Sandstorm share for a Mariana share, a premium of 88 per cent to Mariana's 20-day average price. Following the merger, Mariana's shareholders would own 19 per cent of the expanded Sandstorm. The impetus for pursuing Mariana was its 30-per-cent interest in the Hot Maden gold project in Turkey. Mr. Horsburgh, Mariana's chairman, said that his company's independent directors recommended that their shareholders approve the merger, as it offers exposure to a more diverse set of assets and provides the ability to finance development of Hot Maden.
