New York spot gold gained $5.10 to $1,232.90 on Friday. The TSX Venture Exchange gained 10.28 points to 836.16 while the TSX Gold Index rose 2.05 points to 228.23. Most Canadian gold miners inched upward, with Endeavour Mining Corp. (EDV) leading the way. It gained 87 cents to $27.90 on 286,000 shares.

Chris Lodder's Barkerville Gold Mines Ltd. (BGM), up one-half cent to 49.5 cents on 436,000 shares, has encouraging assays from its Cariboo gold project in British Columbia that support a major drill program planned for this year. The latest assays from the Island Mountain zone included a hit of 13.03 grams of gold per tonne over 9.1 metres. Veining near the Shaft zone yielded assays of up to 9.22 grams per tonne over 2.85 metres. Barkerville also encountered high-grade gold over narrow intervals in the KL zone.

As a result, the company is planning 130,000 metres of new drilling this year. Barkerville already has five rigs operating at Island Mountain in a second phase of drilling. A sixth is working Cow Mountain, where the company is collecting material for metallurgical testing. Two other rigs will be set up soon to continue the exploration and delineation on Island Mountain, Cow Mountain and Barkerville Mountain. Mr. Lodder, president and chief executive officer, says the drilling is targeting the areas with "highest potential for resource definition" within the central portion of the Cariboo project. Meanwhile, he says Barkerville will "continue to advance toward initial production" at Bonanza Ledge this spring.
