New York spot gold fell $1.40 to $1,171.60 on Wednesday. The TSX Venture Exchange gained 2.57 points to 739.54 while the TSX Gold Index lost 2.39 points to 188.42. Most Canadian gold miners retreated today although McEwen Mining Inc. (MUX) did muster a 10-cent gain, closing at $3.92 on 985,000 shares. Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd. (AEM) lost $1.77 to $53.43 on 2.32 million shares.
Marc Henderson and Martin Walter's Treasury Metals Inc. (TML), up two cents to 64 cents on 208,000 shares, has a new president and chief executive officer: Chris Stewart. He replaces William Fisher, a director who filled in on an interim basis after Mr. Walter resigned in June. Mr. Henderson, chairman, offered the usual praise for his new man, lauding his "wide-ranging set of skill sets" that are ideally suited to the company's current phase, noting that Mr. Stewart is "coming off a highly successful operational turnaround at one of Canada's storied gold mines."
