New York spot gold gained $4.70 to $1,339.70 on Tuesday. The TSX Venture Exchange rose 7.94 points to 823.50 while the TSX Gold Index added 1.53 points to 276.21. Most Canadian gold miners rose today. New Gold Inc. (NGD) climbed three cents to $7.45 on 3.41 million shares while Yamana Gold Inc. (YRI) added two cents to $7.49 on 4.71 million shares.
Jonathan Awde's Gold Standard Ventures Corp. (GSV), up 59 cents to $2.52 on 2.53 million shares, has received assays of up to 3.95 grams of gold per tonne over 126.2 metres at its Railroad-Pinion project in Nevada. The assays are from the first three step-out holes the company has drilled to expand its recently discovered North Dark Star deposit. The program was designed to increase the known dimensions of the deposit but it appears to have also enhanced its prospective grade. Mr. Awde, president and chief executive officer, says North Dark Star "is continuing to exceed our expectations" -- best accomplished when one sets his expectations low -- adding that the company now plans to put a greater effort into drilling North Dark Star.
