New York spot gold gained $5.60 to $1,365.40 on Friday. The TSX Venture Exchange gained 4.33 points to 752.12 while the TSX Gold Index rose 7.47 points to 275.55. Most Canadian gold miners had a good day. Iamgold Corp. (IMG) added 38 cents to $6.33 on 5.17 million shares and Yamana Gold Inc. (YRI) gained 34 cents to $7.70 on 11.90 million shares. Barrick Gold Corp. (ABX) was unchanged at $29.08 on 9.21 million shares.

John Moraal and Kevin Whelan's Great Thunder Gold Corp. (GTG) added 4.5 cents to 13 cents on 7.42 million shares on assays of up to 162.8 grams of gold per tonne from outcrop samples collected at its Discovery West zone at Valentine Mountain on Vancouver Island. Three other tests yielded lesser amounts of gold. Great Thunder, just one cent in April, leapt as high as 24 cents in late May, thanks to its acquisition of a Quebec lithium property. In fact, the company appeared to have lost interest in Valentine, as in April it said it was selling a 50-per-cent interest in one of its 25 claims to a private company controlled by Mr. Moraal, one of Great Thunder's directors and its major shareholder, for just $20,000. (That one claim hosts Discovery West.) A few days ago it quietly called off the sale.
