New York spot gold gained $20.10 to $1,298.10 on Friday. The TSX Venture Exchange rose 5.95 points to 715.36 while the TSX Gold Index slipped 1.35 points to 232.17. Most Canadian gold miners were lower today. Yamana Gold Inc. (YRI) dropped 18 cents to $6.21 on 21.74 million shares. Goldcorp Inc. (G) was among the few gainers. It rose 12 cents to $22.97 on 8.80 million shares.
Paul Sorbara and Stephen Pearce's Golden Goliath Resources Ltd. (GNG), closed up three cents to seven cents on 5.85 million shares after hitting an intra-day high of 14 cents. The stock had closed at four cents on Thursday and began the year at just one-half cent. Mr. Sorbara, president and chief executive officer, was called upon to provide an explanation for the three-penny so-called surge. He said he was "unaware of any reason for the recent surge," but took the opportunity to remind investors of the company's San Timoteo gold prospect in Mexico. Golden Goliath recently wrapped up a preliminary program of clay sampling that will help it pick sites for future drilling.
