New York spot gold gained $7.40 to $1,269.90 on Thursday. The TSX Venture Exchange rose 8.80 points to 720.17 while the TSX Gold Index gained 4.40 points to 234.32. Most Canadian gold miners moved higher today. Detour Gold Corp. (DGC) added $1.22 to $31.67 on 1.33 million shares and Kirkland Lake Gold Inc. (KGI) rose 62 cents to $11.98 on 1.75 million shares.
Darin Labrenz and Mark O'Dea's Pure Gold Mining Inc. (PGM), up one cent to 65 cents on 744,000 shares, is more than doubling its planned drill program at Madsen, near Red Lake in Northwestern Ontario. The company had expected to drill 16,000 metres this year; it is now adding 35,000 additional metres at a cost of $9.1-million to the program. About 30,000 of the additional metres will target the McVeigh zone, which Pure Gold hopes to prove is a mirror image of the largely mined Austin zone -- as have previous explorers over the past two decades. The company also proposes to target the Russet South zone, where it has been finding high-grade, near-surface gold, with an additional 5,000 metres of drilling.
