New York spot gold jumped $20.60 to $1,266.40 on Thursday. The TSX Venture Exchange gained 7.18 points to 665.14 while the TSX Gold Index gained 8.22 points to 214.13. Most Canadian gold stocks had a great day. Detour Gold Corp. (DGC) jumped $1.51 to $24.96 on 2.13 million shares, while Kinross Gold Inc. (K) added 54 cents to $6.49 on 18.20 million shares. New Gold Inc. (NGD) was the laggard, losing 13 cents to $5.62 on 5.60 million shares.
Peter Breese's Asanko Gold Inc. (AKG), up 32 cents to $3.63 on 1.22 million shares, has received assays of up to 5.5 grams of gold per tonne over 13 metres on the Nkran extension of its Asanko mine in Ghana. The company had a few other noteworthy intercepts in its March drilling, which included 2,200 metres across 29 reverse-circulation holes. One test yielded 6.73 grams per tonne across nine metres, another 4.38 grams per tonne over a 12-metre interval. Mr. Breese, president and chief executive officer, says that once the rest of the assays are available the company will start working on a new resource estimate, which should be complete before the end of June.
