New York spot gold gained $5.70 to $1,237.90 on Friday. The TSX Venture Exchange lost 4.27 points to 651.91 while the TSX Gold Index lost 1.86 points to 200.82. Most Canadian gold stocks followed bullion lower today. Detour Gold Corp. (DGC) lost 48 cents to $23.72 on 1.22 million shares and Yamana Gold Inc. (YRI) lost 10 cents to $5.32 on 5.94 million shares. Barrick Gold Corp. (ABX) went the other way, gaining eight cents to $20.49 on 5.75 million shares.

Stephen Stares and Clinton Barr's Benton Resources Inc. (BEX), down one-half cent to 4.5 cents on 464,000 shares, has staked the Iron Duke gold prospect, about 75 kilometres northeast of Ignace in Northwestern Ontario. Mr. Stares, president, chief executive officer -- and ever the promoter -- prefers to describe Iron Duke as 20 kilometres east of the Mattabi base-metal mine and 30 kilometres south of the old St. Anthony gold mine. St. Anthony is regarded as the largest mine in the region, but it is a case of a big fish in a small pond: the mine ran intermittently through the first half of the 1900s, producing 63,000 ounces of gold and 16,000 ounces of silver from 300,000 tonnes of ore.
