New York spot gold closed down $4.50 to 1,070.90 on Thursday. The TSX Venture Exchange gained 2.54 points to 521.73 while the TSX Gold Index gained 0.76 point to 125.46. Most Canadian gold miners had a good day. Goldcorp Inc. (G) led the way, adding 25 cents to $15.88 on 693,000 shares. Alacer Gold Corp. (ASR) was one of just a few decliners. It dropped three cents to $2.57 on just 91,000 shares.
Mark Brown and Paul Kuhn's Avrupa Minerals Ltd. (AVU), up one cent to 10.5 cents on 170,000 shares, has received the last assays from its third phase of drilling this year at the Peshter gossan deposit on the Slivovo project in Kosovo. (Australia-based Byrnecut International Ltd. paid for the $2.8-million program under its option to earn a 75-per-cent interest in the project.) The latest assays include 6.02 grams of gold and 20.2 grams of silver per tonne over 74 metres, although the results from several other holes were far less pleasing. Mr. Kuhn, president and chief executive officer, says the latest results "clearly enhance" the mineral inventory at Peshter.
